Striker faces rape attempt charge

Bristol Rovers striker Junior Agogo has appeared in court charged with attempted rape.

The 25-year-old, from Bristol, was charged by police after the alleged rape attempt which was said to have taken place in Doncaster on 7 May.

He appeared before magistrates in the Yorkshire town on Friday but did not enter a plea.

He was granted unconditional bail to reappear before Sheffield Crown Court in the week beginning 15 November.

The footballer appeared in court using his full name Manuel Junior Agogo.

Bristol Rovers issued a statement through their website on Friday, saying they were aware of allegations against one of their players.

"The club will not make any comment on the allegations, and will not speculate on the future course of such allegations," the statement read.

"The club has no present intention to take any disciplinary or other steps in relation to the player concerned."
