Book 'confiscation' stops wedding
Guru Granth Sahib book
The Guru Granth Sahib is the most holy book of the Sikh religion
A Sikh couple had to abandon their wedding when a group of protesters raided the Slough hotel where the event was being held and seized a holy book.

The 40-strong group wrestled the Guru Granth Sahib book from the priest and took it to a nearby temple.

The Sikh protesters claimed the book should not have been taken out of a temple, and to take it near alcohol and cigarettes was disrespectful.

It is the second time the group has disrupted a wedding over religion.

'Work to do'

Two weeks ago they staged a similar "confiscation raid" in Ilford, Essex.

Leaders of the group - the Respect to Guru Granth Sahib Ji Campaign - said they would not tolerate use of the book in social venues as it is defiled by contact with alcohol and cigarettes.

A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said: "As a result of what happened there is a lot of work for the police with the Sikh community.

"Our community and race relations officers will be working hard in Slough in the next week or so."
