Queen unveils statue of herself

The Queen has unveiled a statue of herself, the first time she has done so in the United Kingdom.

The bronze Golden Jubilee Sculpture, which is one-and-a-half times life size, shows the Queen on horseback and went on display at Windsor Great Park in Berkshire on Monday.

The Duke of Edinburgh accompanied the Queen at the ceremony, at 1100 GMT at Queen Anne's Ride.

Sculptor Philip Jackson, from Midhurst, West Sussex, who designed the work, spent nine months working on the project.

He told the BBC: "I went up to Windsor and she was kind enough to ride in the indoor school for me.

"But it is a sculpture of her in the early 70s, so although I had sittings with her which were extremely useful, a certain amount of the sculpture was done from archive photographs.

"I hope she likes it or I'll be in the tower."

The structure, which was under wraps until the unveiling, was cast at the Morris Singer foundry, in Lasham, near Alton, Hampshire.
