A bodybuilder died in a hail of bullets fired from an AK47, a court has heard.

Dave King, 32, of Stevenage, was struck five times in the chest as he left the Physical Limits gym in Hoddesdon, Herts, Luton Crown Court heard.

On Tuesday, weapons expert Liam Hendrikse told jurors he found 26 cartridge cases at the scene in 2003.

Roger Vincent, 33, of Penn, Bucks, David Smith, 33, of Elstree, Herts, and Jason Attridge, 36, from Broadfields, North Harrow, all deny murder.

A fourth man, Julian Elfes from High Wycombe, has pleaded not guilty to perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.

'Contract killing'

Mr King, a father-of-two, was shot dead outside the gym in Brewery Road on 3 October 2003.

The jury has been told that Mr King, a man with a "history of involvement in crime", was executed as a result of a contract taken out on his life.

Andrew Bright QC prosecuting said his former associates thought he had become a "grass".

The prosecution allege that Mr Smith was the driver of a white van that pulled up alongside Mr King as he left the gym.

'False alibi'

They said that Mr Vincent was sitting in the passenger seat and fired the AK47 Kalashnikov.

Mr Attridge is said to have supplied the other two men with a stolen car that was to be used in their getaway.

Mr Elfes' role was to help Mr Vincent lie low at a hotel and to provide him with a false alibi, the prosecution said..

Mr Hendrikse, a firearms examiner with the Forensic Science Laboratory in London, said bullets had smashed into the gym building and fencing.

At least 15 bullets had smashed into the car that Mr King had been standing by, he added.

The case continues.
