Heavy snow and ice alert issued

A number of councils have been forced to preserve supplies of gritting salt

Drivers are being urged to monitor conditions as forecasters predict more snow and ice on the roads.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning of possible heavy snow for residents in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Police continued to warn of the dangers of ice on non-major routes where gritting has been cut back.

Councils in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes received deliveries of extra salt on Saturday.

The Met Office forecast warned of rain and sleet on Sunday evening, with the chance it could turn to snow for a time.

As the weather clears there is a risk of frost, with an ice risk on untreated surfaces.
