Protest after woman's jail death

A woman whose daughter died after taking an overdose in prison has been staging a protest over the recent jail death of a mother from East Sussex.

Pauline Campbell, from Malpas, Cheshire, demonstrated outside HMP Send in Surrey on Wednesday over the death of Emma Kelly.

The 31-year-old, who was jailed for supplying drugs to her young son, was found hanging in her cell on 18 April.

The government said it was tackling self-harm and deaths in custody.

Mrs Campbell's 18-year-old daughter Sarah, died at HMP Styal in Cheshire in January 2003.

She said she has been arrested 14 times during 22 demonstrations relating to the death of women in prisons since then.

Closures recommended

She said Emma Kelly, who was sent to prison in August last year, had been "owed a legal duty of care and she had a right to life".

"Her death raises some very serious questions about the safety of women prisoners in the care of the state... and whether we should be sending vulnerable women to a place of punishment," Mrs Campbell argued.

She said a report published in March by Baroness Corston had recommended the closure of women's prisons, to be replaced with "small custodial units nearer to the women's homes".

A Ministry of Justice statement said: "The Prison Service strives to keep safe those in its care and is doing a considerable amount of work to prevent self-harm and deaths in custody."

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is investigating the death of Emma Kelly.
