Inmate found hanged in jail cell
Frankland Prison
Stephen Lloyd was found in his cell at Frankland Prison
A 24-year-old prisoner serving a sentence for conspiracy to rob has been found hanged in his jail cell.

Stephen Lloyd was part of a Tyneside gang which carried out a series of violent robberies, stealing more than 100,000 in property and cash.

He was serving eight years and nine months at Frankland Prison, near Durham.

The Prison Service said Mr Lloyd, from Fernwood Road, Lemington, Newcastle, was found at 2230 BST on Thursday.

Mr Lloyd was sentenced following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court which ended in May 2003.

Paramedics called

He was one of nine men jailed for a total of 54 years.

Mr Lloyd, who was not on a suicide watch, was hanging from a ligature made from torn bed sheets, the Prison Service said.

Prison officers attempted resuscitation and paramedics were called but Mr Lloyd was pronounced dead one hour later.

A Prison Service spokesman said the police, coroner and next-of-kin had been informed.
