RAC pledges to end battery scam

The RAC has changed its pay policy after a BBC investigation revealed some of its patrolmen were making unnecessary battery sales to customers.

The company admits commission on the sale of batteries was introduced for its patrolmen, but insists it is different for every patrol and was used to facilitate the central supply of parts.

Targets and rewards on parts and battery fittings have now been abolished by the RAC, which said it was 'extremely concerned' by the issues raised in the programme.

the BBC programme Rogue Traders was shown on Thursday and featured patrolmen from the Bristol area.

Investigators posing as stranded motorists called out 16 RAC patrols for the programme, six of which changed the battery on the car unnecessarily.

An RAC spokesperson told BBC News Online: "We do not expect anybody to behave in this way and we will be investigating the matter internally.

"We are proud of the reputation for integrity and excellent customer service that RAC has built up over 105 years.

"Our 1,350 patrols are highly trained professionals. Their key role is to get members back on the road safely and quickly."
