New York schools return
Schools nearest the disaster site remain shut
More schools in New York were due to re-open on Monday, and alternative arrangements have now been made for those most directly affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center.
A special fund has been set up for donations specifically to help children and schools affected by the disaster. Eight schools nearest the site of the World Trade Center remain closed. Thousands of students from those schools are being relocated to others in Manhattan. Their staffs were told to report to their temporary locations on Monday. Holiday All the city's schools are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. So students will take up their temporary places at other designated schools on Thursday. The chancellor of the city's education board, Harold Levy, said in a statement: "Many generous citizens of this great nation want to help the schoolchildren in New York City's public school system in this time of crisis. 'Outpouring of concern' "In response to this outpouring of concern, financial contributions are now being accepted to help address the needs of children and schools affected by the World Trade Center tragedy." He said all the money donated would go to those schools and schoolchildren affected by the tragedy. Donations can be made to:
