Call for inquiry into rising credit card charges

One of the government's former financial advisors is calling for an investigation into the profit margins of credit card companies.

Expert Ros Altmann says current credit card rates of around 18 per cent are excessive and that it may be time for a regulator to be brought in to oversee the charges.

However the companies say their rates are justified.
