From smart meters to smart grids

All homes will have to have smart electricity meters installed by 2020.

This will mean customers will be able to see exactly how much electricity and gas they are using and relay the data to energy firms automatically.

For the electricity industry the buzz revolves round the 'smart grid'.

The BBC's John Moylan spoke to Jon Fenn electricity operations manager at the National Grid to find out what that means.
