US soft drinks company Pepsi has filed a lawsuit against arch rival Coca-Cola over an advertising campaign which it says is false and deceptive.

Pepsi's Gatorade drinks division is taking action over a new TV advert for Coca-Cola's Powerade Option drink.

The advert features two carts in a race, with the one with fewer bales - or "calories" - winning the contest.

Pepsi claims the advert suggests that because Powerade has fewer calories it can make people go faster.

"In other words, Coca-Cola is telling consumers that Powerade Option's fewer calories literally make you go faster," the lawsuit said.

"However, Coca-Cola cannot possibly substantiate this overall superiority claim."

It is seeking a permanent injunction banning Coke from running the adverts.

Coca-Cola said the adverts were truthful and that Gatorade could not prove its allegations.

"Our advertising tells the truth, and we stand by it," said spokesman Dan Schafer.
