Thorntons appoints new chairman
Chocolate maker Thorntons has named Chris Burnett as its new chairman.

The company said Mr Burnett, 62, would replace chairman John Thornton, who is set to retire on 26 April.

Mr Burnett will step down as chairman of Marshalls, the UK's biggest maker of concrete block paving, once a replacement for him has been found.

In its latest comments on trading, Thorntons said sales had improved after a tough summer last year when the firm blamed hot weather for lower sales.

Mr Thornton said the new chairman would bring to Thorntons an "outstanding business track record and skills".

Mr Burnett's previous posts include chairman of Lee Cooper Group, chairman of Kunick and also chief executive of Silentnight Holdings.

The Derbyshire-based confectioner late last year said it was in takeover talks with a number of interested parties.

But in February it said it had terminated the talks as none of the offers it had received "represented fair value for shareholders".
