The accident happened on the A19 Tees flyover
A brother and sister have been killed while travelling the wrong way along a road closed off for repairs.

The 30-year-old man and his 19-year-old sister were in the car when it hit a metal safety fence on the A19 near Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The pair, from Stockton-on-Tees, were returning from a 21st birthday party when the accident happened.

A 19-year-old rear seat passenger suffered a broken leg and has been kept in for treatment at Middlesbrough General Hospital.

Steel fence

The dark-coloured Fiat was ripped apart in the collision which occurred in a coned-off area of the River Tees flyover at 0245 GMT.

Workmen had closed the road overnight for repairs and a Cleveland Police spokesman said the car was travelling north on the southbound carriageway when it hit the safety barrier.

The car struck with such force a wheel was torn off and embedded in the steel fence.

The engine was also ripped from the vehicle which careered hundreds of feet down the carriageway.
